Gildernew hits out at Western Trust over Drumclay closure

Published: 19 December, 2018

Sinn Féin spokesperson for carers and wellbeing Colm Gildernew MLA has strongly criticised the Western Trust over the decision to close Drumclay Care Home in Enniskillen.

Commenting after meeting he organised along with Councillor Debbie Coyle, the Chief Executive and senior management of the Western Trust today, Colm Gildernew said:

"The care provided to vulnerable adults by Drumclay Care Home is a much-needed service, particularly in the context of a shortage of nursing and residential care beds in the Trust area.

"The Western Trust indicated to me and other public representatives during a previous meeting in September that they intended to keep Drumclay Care Home open and possibly under the management of the Trust itself.

"Instead, two weeks before Christmas the Trust decided to close the home and residents have had to leave.

"This has put great pressure and strain on residents and their families coming up to the holiday season.

"Today I made it clear to the Trust Management that this is unacceptable.

"The Western Trust needs to be clear about the future of Drumclay Care Home with the residents."

Enniskillen Councillor Debbie Coyle, who has been working with the affected families since news of the closure broke said,

"I have been in contact with many of the families affected by this closure for the past few weeks.

"Most are now satisfactorily rehomed. However, I had been asked to raise issues with the Trust. These issues have been taken on board and, whilst I share the families' disappointment, I am satisfied that the Trust are working hard to resolve issues around dementia bed provision in the area.

"We in Sinn Féin will continue to urge the Western Trust to ensure appropriate levels of nursing and residential care places are provided for vulnerable people in the locality, including at Drumclay Care Home." CRÍOCH/ENDS
