Councillor Feely has called on everyone to get behind a campaign which calls for the Local Government Pension Scheme in the north to divest from holdings in fossil fuel assets.

Speaking after the Friends of the Earth launch of the 'Fossil Free NI' campaign on Tuesday, the Erne North Councillor said,

"It was great to see such a good turnout at the launch today. "Both Sinn Féin and this new campaign calls for NILCOSG to divest the entirety of its almost £350m holdings in fossil fuel assets.

The pension scheme invests in corporations including Royal Dutch Shell and BP who, over the years, have played a significant role in contributing to climate change to feed their profits.

"It should also be noted that the pension scheme has investments in Centrica who are a major backer of the fracking industry.

"This is the largest pension scheme in the north and is funded by pension contributions from local government as well as from a raft of other organisations.

"I, along with my party colleagues, agree with and fully support the campaign's aims for NILCOSG to divest the £348,957,570 it has invested in fossil fuel companies and I would encourage others to do likewise." - Ends/Críoch
