'Reassurance welcome but minibus mitigation still needed' - Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin has welcomed reassurances from the Department of Infrastructure that crucial transport services will be protected but stressed that tangible mitigation measures will need to be put in place.

The party's transport spokesperson Sean Lynch said concerns over the future of community and school transport systems would remain until specific measures are put in place to deal with the proposed changes to the legislation which regulates them.

The Fermanagh/South Tyrone MLA commented:

"The Department is bringing forward proposed changes to minibus regulations which present difficulties for many service users including teachers, health workers, youth workers and community organisations.

"And while we appreciate this has come about as a result of a legal challenge and European regulations, we have also been engaging closely with departmental officials to stress the need for mitigation measures.

"The department has now moved to reassure service users that steps will be taken to provide clarity and to protect vital transport services. "That reassurance is welcome but until we see the detail of how they intend to safeguard services, concerns will remain."
