Disappointment over Westend Community Centre Development

Published: 18 June, 2015

Sinn Féin Cllr Debbie Coyle has expressed her extreme disappointment at the contents and the tone of a letter received by the Department of Social Development regarding the development of Westend Community Centre, Enniskillen

The letter was received at a recent meeting of Community and Regeneratioon Committee of Fermanagh Omagh Council.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Coyle said,

"When I was first elected in 2011 I joined the Neighbourhood Renewal Committee and this project was one of those classed as a priority, with planning permission being granted last year. Now, however, DSD has informed us that the new community facility has been dropped from their list as there is now no funding for it!

"The current Westend Community Centre is an intergenerational, cross community centre where old and young, from all sections of the community come together. It is used every day, allowing organisations to run different classes and events for local people, especially those living in the Windmill Heights, Coleshill and general Rossory area. Due to growing numbers using the Westend and the fact that they are limited in what they can offer due to lack of space, the facilities are fast becoming unsuitable.

"Therefore this new development was really needed and it provided hope for the users and wider community. The new building was promoted and supported by the Coleshill Community Association and the Windmill Heights Community Association, as well as community associations across the town.

The Enniskillen town Councillor continued,

"The money was available in 2011, the project was a priority and so I have asked the council to write to the Minister expressing that in the councils view, this correspondence was premature and to highlight our disappointment in the manner in which this application has been handled. I want the Council to demand some answers from DSD. Where has the money been spent? What has happened to the available monies? Why has this project been dropped?

"As a Councillor for the Enniskillen town, I want to see the best for the town and for the people of the town. My party colleagues and I fully support this project and we will not stop until we get answers." ENDS
