McGahan welcomes prospects around A5

Published: 17 June, 2015

Sinn Féin MLA Bronwyn McGahan has welcomed the prospect of a paper on the A5 coming before the Executive before summer recess.

The news comes after Ms McGahan raised the issue with the Deputy First Minister during Assembly Question Time.

Speaking after the question was raised, Ms McGahan explains,

"I raised the issue with the Minister following the twentieth meeting of the North/South Ministerial Council (NSMC), which was held in Dublin on Friday 5 June 2015.

"The Minister assured me that useful discussions were had around the prospects for the A5 and that the issue actually comes up at all of the meetings held.

"Mr McGuinness also informed me that the next step is now for the Regional Development Minister to publish the draft orders, which he confirmed he would be publishing imminently. Given the time frame that Minister Danny Kennedy has outlined, the Deputy First Minister expects to see the new Executive paper in advance of the summer recess.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA continues,

"This is a vital project for all of the counties in the west from Derry right through Tyrone into County Fermanagh. Large numbers of my constituents commute to Belfast everyday and therefore this is a vital route for them, linking up with the M1 at Ballygawley.

"It will also supply first-class route to Dublin, encouraging more cross border co-operation, trading and tourism. Therefore I look forward to the Regional Development Minister bringing the draft orders to the Executive table and would encourage progress on the project as a matter of urgency." ENDS
