Anderson welcomes EU call for moratorium on fracking
Published: 10 June, 2015
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed the European Union's call for a moratorium on fracking across all member states.
Speaking after voting for the amendment in Strasbourg today, Ms Anderson said;
"Sinn Féin has been to the fore in the campaign against fracking across the island of Ireland.
"I welcomed the opportunity in today's debate to put on record once again our strong opposition to fracking.
"The Parliament voted in favour of an amendment urging EU member states not to authorise any new exploration or extraction operations of unconventional fuels within the EU.
"Earlier this year I hosted a major international anti-fracking conference in Fermanagh which showed the extent of the depth of feeling in the area against fracking.
"I am the only MEP from the North who has consistently opposed hydraulic fracking and have consistently voted in favour of mandatory environmental impact assessments.
"Sinn Féin will continue to oppose fracking and to support communities who are opposed to this controversial process."
