Michelle Gildernew, MP Candidate for Fermanagh and South Tyrone addressed the annual County Monaghan Easter Commemoration today in Monaghan town.

Speaking at the Commemoration, Ms.Gildernew said,

"It was a great pleasure and a great honour to be asked to say a few words at this annual Commemoration today. Although I have spoken at this event before, it is always a delight to come back.

"The crowd gathered here and indeed at Commemorations right across the country is testament to the fallen volunteers and our patriotic dead. The numbers at these events are rising, which again shows that the desire for Ireland to be free is actually strengthening.

"99 years ago this Easter, 7 signatories, and thousands of civilians, gave their lives for those ideals and beliefs that continue to drive republicans in the present day. We salute the courageous men and women who struck that blow for independence; we salute their bravery and their spirit, their determination to give the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of the constitutional rights of the Irish people to a 32 county Republic.

"99 years later, we now have more citizens coming to the core republican values of sovereignty and equality. We have more citizens supporting Sinn Féin as the party that will deliver Irish unity, build a fair economy and establish the republic.

Ms.Gildernew continues,

"We want a united, equal and inclusive Ireland. With the upcoming referendum on Equal Marriage in the 26 counties on 22nd May, Sinn Féin is proud to support marriage equality north and south. We are proud to stand with the diverse identities which make up our nation. We offer equality, support and respect for all identities.

"Next year will be the centenary of the 1916 rising and plans are already in place to mark this momentous occasion. I would encourage everybody to get involved in the planning of these events and pay homage to the men and women that gave their lives for the freedom of this country - which Sinn Féin continues to deliver."
