Fermanagh South Tyrone Sinn Féin Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Gildernew hands in nomination forms

Fermanagh South Tyrone Sinn Féin MP candidate Michelle Gildernew, speaking this morning after handing in her nomination papers to the Electoral Office said,

"This time 34 years ago, Bobby Sands's nomination papers for this seat were lodged by Jim Gibney and Owen Carron.

"I have held this seat for 13 of the 34 years since Bobby's death and I don't intend to give it up now.

"Sinn Féin has done nothing but deliver change and strive for equality throughout this constituency and across the island.

"During my time as MP I have been vocal on, and delivered results on, a broad range of issues from social welfare to rural affairs to tourism.

"I have fought against austerity, fought for equality and ensured that the most vulnerable in our society were protected. Not one party from the North managed to stop one cut through the floor of Westminster yet Sinn Féin managed to protect more people and offset more cuts in direct negotiations with the British Government than all those parties combined.

Ms Gildernew continues,

"This election will be fought and won on the doorsteps of this constituency. We plan to knock on every door and engage with every voter between now and the election - which is a short 35 days away.

"I am confident of retaining this seat on behalf of Sinn Féin and the Nationalist and Republican people of this area, and if re-elected, I will continue to work hard for all the people of this constituency.

"Our nominations today are a significant step in the countdown to May 7th. I would again call for people to make sure they are registered to vote and to cast their vote for me. Anyone who is interested in becoming involved in this election campaign can make contact with their local representative and be an agent for change in Ireland."
