Gildernew backs Moy Shared Education Programme

Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew last night attended a meeting in Moy, Co.Tyrone around the Shared Education Programme which was announced last July for Moy Primary School and St John's Catholic Primary in Moy.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms Gildernew said,

"Although this programme was only officially launched last July, I have been involved in and liaising with both schools since January 2008.

"This shared campus initiative proposes to build a single, 11-class base school on a new site to accommodate both schools and the playgroup.

"While each school will retain its own distinct ethos and identity, it is envisaged that the two schools will share facilities such as the multi-purpose hall, play areas, library and ancillary accommodation.

"This plan will create enhanced educational and personal development opportunities for everyone involved.

"Critics of shared education believe it's a poor alternative for integration, but supporters of the model say it is a move forward and can help rural primary schools stave off closure.

"I have always been a supporter of integrated education and I will continue to support it. The status quo is not feasible & vast majority of parents are excited and supportive of this visionary new model." ENDS
