Bruton comments bizarre and erroneous - Gildernew
Published: 18 March, 2015
Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has said comments by former Fine Gael leader John Bruton on current difficulties in the political process in the North are bizarre and erroneous.
"The comments by John Bruton are ludicrous and are yet another sign of his total disengagement from the political process in the North.
"This will not be surprising to republicans and nationalists in the North given John Bruton's attitude to the North during his term as Taoiseach, where he acquiesced to unionist demands at every turn.
"His bizarre claims which misrepresent Sinn Féin's position on welfare protections shows how disconnected he is and displays a complete lack of understanding of the current situation.
"Throughout all of the negotiations Sinn Féin's priority has been protecting the poor and most vulnerable in society from the austerity cuts agenda of the Tory-led British government in London.
"It is no surprise that as a senior figure in a party wedded to austerity that John Bruton would not understand this principled opposition.
"A society is judged on how it protects the most vulnerable and Sinn Féin is committed to opposing austerity and standing up for the vulnerable north and south." Ends/Críoch
