Budget prioritises education, skills and job creation - Flanagan

Speaking in the Assembly today Sinn Féin MLA Phil Flanagan welcomed agreement on the Executive budget which prioritises education, skills and job creation.

Mr Flanagan said:

"While this is a hard budget, the task of balancing the books, tackling inequality and driving economic growth is never easy.

"But this budget prioritises education and skills development, job creation and growing the economy.

"It makes additional allocations of more than £150million targeting health and education.

"Between them the two Departments responsible for training and investment in job creation, DEL and DETI received an additional £43.6million.

"Our combined focus should now be on strengthening local manufacturing, promoting innovation and encouraging international trade and development.

"Supporting business, creating sustainable employment and ensuring people have access to a job is the key to economic regeneration.

"Of course with greater fiscal powers our economic policy could be tailored precisely to our own needs to create jobs and tackle the barriers to employment by exercising control over tax, welfare and national insurance.

"Growing a sustainable and balanced regional economy must become a political and social priority." CRÍOCH/END
