MP addresses NUS-USI Women's Conference
Published: 10 February, 2015
Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew addressed the NUS-USI Women's Conference in North West Regional College in Derry, yesterday.
Speaking from the conference, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP said,
"It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to speak at the NUS-USI Women's Conference today. The energy and enthusiasm in the room was brilliant and to see such a large crowd of women from all ages, races, backgrounds and abilities turn up to debate and discuss issues which effect them was really heartening.
"The women in this room, and even those outside of this room, are our future. They will not put up the daily sexism in and out of the work place, they will fight against the stereotypical housewife representation and they will break through the glass ceiling that I, and many before me, did. And I will be here to support them every step of the way.
Ms Gildernew continues,
"Motions such as campaigning against cuts and creches for colleges were passed here today, which goes to show that although every woman has the capabilities and capacity to get to where they want to go, their children will always come into the equation.
"I want to commend the outgoing Women's Officer Ellie Drake on a great year in her post and congratulate the incoming Women's Officer, Joanna Gowers and wish her the best of luck in the coming year. NUS-USI has played a pivotal role in the campaign for equality and creating the conditions to allow everyone to fulfil their potential, no matter what gender and until we reach equality, I will continue being a part of it."
