MLA encourages Fermanagh and South Tyrone to the Heart Month 10 Minute Challenge

Published: 2 February, 2015

Phil Flanagan MLA is getting behind British Heart Foundation (BHF) NI's Heart Month and is calling on the people of Fermanagh and South Tyrone to take 10 minutes to change their life during February.

Around 14,310 people in Fermanagh and South Tyrone are living with cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attack and stroke. But the risk of many conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, heart attack and stroke, can be significantly reduced by making improvements to your lifestyle.

This February, the country's heart charity, with the support of Phil Flanagan MLA is urging local people to take at least 10 minutes every day to improve their heart health. Whether it's getting active, making simple food swaps or planning your journey to quit smoking, every little change can make a big difference to your heart health.

On Monday 2 February Phil had the chance to sign up and take the 10 minute Challenge. He also had the opportunity to hear all about the pioneering new partnership between BHF NI, Diabetes UK NI and Tesco. This three year partnership aims to raise millions of pounds and with local support it will help to save lives through helping thousands of local people eat better and get active, reducing the risk of serious ill-health in the future, as well as helping to fund the vital work of BHF NI and Diabetes UK NI.

Phil, said: "It's really important that people are given realistic and manageable advice that will fit in to their daily routine as well as improve their health.

"Getting off the bus two stops early, trying a new fruit or getting active during the ad break of your favourite TV show can all help pave the way towards a healthier lifestyle. It's great to see BHF Northern Ireland urging people to make small changes that can make the biggest difference.

"So don't worry if you've not got loads of time to spare - take on the Heart Month Challenge this February, and take ten minutes each day to give your own heart some love."

During Heart Month BHF NI is offering an email support programme and advice to help people improve their diet, get more active or quit smoking.
