"It is about time that we cared for our carers." - Gildernew
Published: 22 January, 2015
MP Michelle Gildernew tonight attended the latest in a series of Manifesto Meetings regarding the CAUSE Carers Manifesto.
Speaking after the meeting Ms.Gildernew says,
"CAUSE Carers support families, friends and partners caring for loved ones experiencing serious mental illness. Serious mental illness can result in significant life changes for everyone close to it and in some cases can require around the clock care.
"The number of carers has increased from 185,000 to 214,000 in the North between 2001 and 2011. 1 in 10 of those suffers from ill health and a further 18% feel they are in poor health.
The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP continues,
"Carers already save the economy in the North £4.4 billion a year with the unpaid care they provide and it is about time that we cared for our carers. They treat those they care for with the dignity and the respect that they deserve; therefore the carers should receive the same dignity and respect.
"CAUSE already provides a one-to-one support and advocacy for carers, a network of carer support groups across NI, a confidential Helpline for carers and Social opportunities where carers can meet other carers. Therefore the least the Assembly and in particular the Health Minister can do for them is fufill the demands outlined in their manifesto, which includes to be 'equal partners in care', 'supporters in recovery' and 'advocates for change.'"
"I was delighted to be able to attend the meeting tonight, to provide my input and I vow to continue to support CAUSE carers and the tremendous work that they do." ENDS
