Gildernew welcomes protection of Education Budget

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has welcomed the £63m allocated to Education Department in the final budget.

Ms. Gildernew said,

"The announcement that the Education budget is to gain £63m echoes the arguments that Sinn Féin has been making all along.

"As a direct result of Sinn Féin taking on board what lobbyists, boards of governors and community groups were saying, the Executive Budget now protects one of the core areas of our society; the education sector.

"From an early age, education helps to mould how we think and therefore it effects us in all manner of ways; how we interact with each other; how we relate to institutions which in their own way depend on us and shape our lives; how we view the world at a social and cultural level.

"Therefore this funding is vital and will not only help our children and the youth in our community but also will help protect frontline services such as the jobs of teaching and non teaching staff.

"Education is a basic and fundamental human right. It should be universally available as a right and assist everyone, without exception, to develop his or her potential.

"The education of our children is one of the greatest gifts we can bestow and therefore Sinn Féin will continue to fight for adequate funding for teaching and learning." ENDS
