Gildernew welcomes launch of consultation on Irish Language Act
Published: 14 January, 2015
Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has welcomed Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín's announcement that a consultation on a draft Irish Language Act will be launched next month.
The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP said;
"I welcome the fact that Carál Ní Chuilín has now announced a consultation on a draft Acht na Gaeilge.
"It has always been Sinn Féin's view that legislation is needed to protect the rights and entitlements of Irish language speakers. An Irish language act is a key outstanding commitment of the St Andrew's Agreement.
"This consultation will also show those who have been opposed to Acht na Gaeilge in the past that the Irish language belongs to us all, not just Sinn Fein.
"For too long the Irish language has been subject to the whims and vagaries of political fortune but this consolation process will give everyone the opportunity to see just what an Irish language act contains
"Gaelic speakers in Scotland, Wales and in the rest of this island are already afforded the protection of language acts.
"Sinn Féin supports the restoration of the Irish language as the spoken language among the majority of people in Ireland and the creation of a truly bilingual society. I look forward to the consultation process and encourage everyone with an interest in the Irish language to have their say." Ends/Críoch
