MP extends sympathy to family of Robert Brown
Published: 1 December, 2014
MP Michelle Gildernew has expressed her sympathy to the family of Robert Brown who was killed at his farm at Knockmanoul, near Ballinamallard.
The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP says,
"The tragic and untimely death of Robert Brown is unsurprisingly devastating for his family, friends and the local community.
"Farming is a vital part of the North's economy, providing employment to nearly 47,000 people across 24,500 farms.
"Unfortunately, the safety record of farming in the North is poor and continues to represent a disproportionate number of deaths compared to other work sectors - having claimed over 100 lives over the past 16 years.
"The farm is a complex workplace where the farmer is often working alone on difficult terrain with heavy machinery and with livestock that can, at times, be very unpredictable,"
"I am calling on all members of the farming community to become aware of safety issues and adhere to them.
"The tragic death of Robert serves to highlight the dangers faced by working farmers and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time." ENDS
