Taking undocumented immigrants out of the shadows a positive step - Flanagan
Published: 25 November, 2014
Sinn Féin MLA Phil Flanagan has given a cautious welcome to President Obama's announcement regarding undocumented immigrants in the US.
Mr Flanagan, who has been active on raising the issue on behalf of Fermanagh families in America and who recently brought a motion to Stormont supporting the rights of the undocumented, said:
"Taking undocumented immigrants out of the shadows is a step in the right direction.
"However it is unclear how many Irish people will actually benefit from the new measures, which don't go as far as we have been campaigning for.
"Some people have been in the US for over twenty years and are settled with families and American born children.
"Many people from Fermanagh have been unable to return home for decades due to the fear of not being allowed back into the USA where they have now built their lives.
"We will continue to work on this issue with members of Congress in an effort to secure full recognition for all undocumented Irish people in the US."
