Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA, Seán Lynch has called on the Minister of Regional Development Danny Kennedy to maintain the rural road infrastructure.

The motion, tabled on Tuesday outlined:

"this Assembly notes the failure of the Department for Regional Development to adequately fund the roads infrastructure maintenance budget; further notes that this lack of funding will result in job losses or reduced working hours for contractors and suppliers.."

Speaking in the Stormont Chamber, Mr Lynch stated,

"The condition of the roads in the North is of vital importance to the economy, and, therefore, it is essential that the road network is properly maintained to provide a safer network.

"As an elected representative from a rural area, I find that roads are one of the key issues that come to our attention on a daily basis. I have a continual list of roads needing upgrade and repair in Fermanagh, our constituents deserve better. "

"While there has been improvement in the rural road infrastructure over the past few years we cannot allow that investment to be lost by abandoning the maintenance and improvement scheme.

Mr Lynch continued;

"I spoken to people who will be paid off as a result of the failure of the Department for Regional Development to adequately fund the roads infrastructure maintenance budget and they are people with real livelihoods and families."

"The resource budget for small maintenance works is a small percentage of the Department's overall budget and I have no doubt that, if the Minister was serious savings could have been found elsewhere without job losses and without causing safety issues for the public.

"The Minister must act now before the roads deteriorate to a state that they become unsafe to travel which would have a major impact on the entire rural economy and way of life."
