Thatcherite agenda designed to hollow out the welfare state - Gildernew
Published: 11 October, 2014
Sinn Fein MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone, Michelle Gildernew speaks at the "Communities Against Cuts Rally" in Belfast.
Thousands of people turned out to support the rally in Writer Square, Belfast on Saturday 11th October.
Speaking at the rally, Ms.Gildernew says,
"We at Sinn Fein are totally opposed to Welfare Cuts, which will punish the most vulnerable people in our society."
"Don't be fooled by this title. It has nothing at all to do with reform, simply an attack on the poor by a cabinet of millionaires who have no idea of the realities of trying to survive on benefits, or low income."
"It is a Thatcherite agenda designed to hollow out the welfare state & destroy public services. If implemented here, these cuts will take money out of the pockets of those that can least afford it. These cuts are not about getting people back into work, as the Tories have claimed."
"The cuts will further erode the living standards of the unemployed & push more children into poverty. These cuts are also aimed at workers on low incomes - cutting child benefits, working tax credits & entitlements to housing benefits. "
"The DUP would implement these cuts in the morning; Sinn Fein will fight with every ounce of our being to protect the vulnerable. " END
